Thanks for taking the time to check out our Maughan Ranch Horses. All of the horses listed here were born and raised on our West Fork Ranch in Peoples Valley, AZ. It is beautiful, rough country and we think it makes great horses. We know, and love, all of our studs and mares and they have been hand picked to produce what we feel are superb horses. Each foal is pasture born and we halter break, and socialize, them for the first few months. We then set them loose in our rough country where they learn how to fend for themselves and, how to handle the rocky terrain. In our many years of horse raising and training, we have learnt that this builds confidence that enables these horses to become athletic and safe in any environment. At approx. 2 years of age, we bring them back in and continue the process of getting them ready to be a great companion for you. They are usually ridden for about 120 days and during this process we are constantly evaluating their progress and working with them in as many environments as possible. They will have all worked cows and spent many hours on the range, in the arena and each horse is also required to pack salt for us. At the end of this period of their development, they are assessed. Those that make the grade are posted for sale and those that we feel need a little more work are either sent to one of our working ranches, to gain more experience and maturity, or put back into the training cycle at West Fork. Our goal is to offer all our young horses the very best basic learning experience and we will then leave the rest to you. We hope you’ll love your Maughan Ranch horse as much as we do.

One of the most “cowy” horses we have worked with. This eye catching beautiful Paint comes from a cutting championship line and Peppy is following in their footsteps. He is quick, strong willed and independent. We do not recommend him for a novice rider as he is all business when he gets around the cows. He has worked all aspects of ranch life but is most comfortable and impressive when cutting and sorting. Put him on a cow and he is on auto pilot from there. His front end movement is spectacular and if you have a good seat and are confident around high performance horses this guy will become your go to horse. He would be a great fit as a competition cutter.

Pep is our very unique blue roan mare. Born and raised on the Ranch. She is a great size, stout and strong but not too tall. Comfortable to ride. She is still young and will take a patient rider in the beginning as she has a strong will. We love that she has a no quit spirit and she is willing to go all day. Athletic with a big stop, she’ll be a great companion in the arena and out doctoring or checking the fences. Like all our horses, she has spent plenty of time with her shoes off in rough country so she’ll look after you when you need it.

Beautiful palomino mare. “Queen” Solid quick footed mare with a predictable temperament. She has a calm demeanor and a go all-day work ethnic. She has worked all over the ranch in her first 90 days and we are excited about her potential as a solid all around horse. She is willing to try anything and when you ride her you can feel that she wants to learn and work with you. She was raised on the ranch and we think she’ll make a great addition to your ranch and family!

Badger is going to be a bigger horse, probably over 15 hands. He is strong and very stable underneath, but is surprisingly athletic. When you ask him to go he will move! He is good minded and moves smoothly all over the ranch. He has done it all and he is still very young. He is trustworthy and predictable but will need a patient rider initially as he still has a lot to learn. Our expert horse trainers and cowboys love this horse and think he is going to be a great all-rounder.

Genuine Ice is a people horse. When you walk into the corral, he is the first to come over and say 'hi'. His deep copper Palomino color is eye catching and unusual. He has done everything on the ranch including roping, penning, packing and vetting, but his real strength is in his likability and predictability. He will work the cows when asked, but you get the feeling from him that he’d prefer to be riding out on the trail. If you are looking for a solid, predictable, young horse that will allow you to make a mistake or two with him, we’d recommend Genuine Ice.
